Emily Caswell

I am so relieved to hear someone else say this! I have always worked from home and never had "child care" while I did it, so in that sense my family always came first. At the same time, when the business phone rings, the kids are put on hold--this is just the way it has to be! At times I've felt guilty about this, but if I'm honest, I realize that the benefits of my home business (flexibility and extra income, not to mention my constant presence!) far outweigh the occasional inconvenience to my kids. In fact, it's been positive for them to learn patience and flexibility, themselves!

Thank you for the reminder to "lighten up" and not be so hard on ourselves! I think as Indies we're inventing a whole new way of thinking about work and family, and they will overlap in different ways for everyone. It can only be positive for our children to see us close-up as we enjoy our work, overcome obstacles, and find creative solutions to everyday issues. This is what it REALLY means to have it "together"!
